About Summer
Creative media extraordinaire, focusing on projects that both educate and entertain
Having an affinity for language and cultures, I obtained my Master’s degree in Deaf Cultural Studies from Gallaudet University and am currently pursuing my second Master’s degree in Digital Literacy and a certificate in Educational Technology from the University of Texas, Rio Grande.
I periodically teaches ASL to deaf adults at Austin Community College and Deaf Studies courses through Gallaudet University’s online degree program. I specialize in educational technology, development of online curricula, language translation, & accessibility technologies.
With more than twenty years of filmmaking experience and more than eight years as an instructor within academia, I established The Giving Cypress, LLC, an educational media company, in 2014, to provide videography and educational consulting services. I also have a video production company, SummaLove Films, which is nested under The Giving Cypress, LLC.

As a creative,
- I thrive in working on innovative creative projects that offer new perspectives
- I am passionate about developing media that capture the beauty of culture and human communication making these accessible to signing and non-signing communities
- I am eager to work in spaces where language and technology intersect and help make communication happen as natural as possible
While my educational background is in the Arts and Humanities as well as in Digital Media Literacy, I have developed a strong capability to translate dense academic language to a more colloquial and accessible form of visual media. I am adept in creativity, organization, production coordination as well as instructional design. Through my media company, I have provided contractual services for a wide range of educational media products to federally funded projects: National Deaf Center on Postsecondary Outcomes, pepnet2, Communication Services for the Deaf, Gallaudet University, University of Texas Systems, SafePlace and Disability Rights of Texas.
Aside from teaching and consulting, I engage in projects that focus on environmental and social justice issues. You can find me volunteering at community events, providing media and accessibility services. When not working with technology, I engage in activities like trail running, dancing, traveling, and simply being outdoors.
